Wicker is hard woven fiber formed into a rigid material, usually used for baskets, furniture, lamps and lamp shades. Our wicker lamp shades are made from natural plant origin, not plastic.

Materials for wicker lamps and shades can be any part of the plant, cane, rattan stalks, willow switches, reed and bamboo.

The frame is made of stiffer materials, after which more pliant material is used to fill in the frame. Wicker is light and sturdy, making it suitable for furniture that will be moved often. It is often used for lamps, lamp shades, porch and patio furniture.

Wicker furniture has been documented as far back as ancient Egypt and wicker baskets have been found in Pompeii. The extensive use of wicker during the Iron Age had an influence on the development of some Celtic art. Rattan and wicker was often used during the Arts and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century.

Rattan is the name for about 600 species of palm plants native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia.

Most rattans differ from other palms in having slender stems, 2–5 cm diameter, with long internodes between the leaves. They are not trees but more vine-like, scrambling through and over other vegetation. Rattans are also superficially similar to bamboo. Unlike bamboo, rattan stems are solid, and most species need structural support and cannot stand on their own. However, some are more like typical palms with stouter erect trunks. Many rattans have spines which act as hooks to aid climbing over other plants and to deter herbivores. Rattans have been known to grow up to hundreds of meters long. Nearly 70% of the world's rattan is in Indonesia: Borneo, Sulawesi and the Sumbawa islands. Other rattan comes from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
